Heat transfer for logos, names, numbers and small runs on almost any garment

Heat transfer is a decoration method in which a design is made on a carrier, such as vinyl, film or transfer paper, and then applied to the garment with heat and pressure. It covers several techniques, including cut vinyl, flock, reflective film and printed transfers, and it is widely used for names and numbers on team wear, logos on workwear, small branding on uniforms and personalised items.

This page explains the main types of heat transfer, what each is good for, where it works well, what its limits are, how durability and care work and how quantities and sampling are handled. It is written for buyers who need clean, repeatable decoration on garments in modest quantities. We arrange heat transfer as part of a complete garment order or as decoration on blank garments.

The main types of heat transfer

Several materials are applied by heat, and each gives a different look and feel.

  • Cut vinyl solid colour film cut into shapes, good for names, numbers and simple logos.
  • Flock a soft, velvet-like surface with a raised, textured feel.
  • Reflective film a surface that reflects light, used for safety and visibility on workwear and sportswear.
  • Printed transfers full-colour designs printed on film and applied by heat, which overlap with DTF.
  • Specialty films metallic, glitter and other effects for particular looks.

We help you choose the type that fits the garment, the design and how the item will be used.

How the process works

The design is first prepared as a file. For vinyl, a cutting machine cuts the shape from a roll of film, and the unwanted material around it is removed in a step called weeding. The design is then positioned on the garment, and a heat press applies the right temperature and pressure for the right time, so that the adhesive bonds with the fabric. The carrier sheet is peeled away, leaving the design.

The design is prepared and checked for line thickness and detail.

  2. 02

The material is cut or printed.

  3. 03

    Excess material is removed.

  4. 04

The design is positioned on the garment.

  5. 05

Heat and pressure apply the design, and the carrier is removed.

Because there are no screens and little setup, heat transfer is practical for small runs and for items that differ from piece to piece.

What heat transfer does well

Heat transfer has clear strengths for the right job.

  • Names and numbers each garment can carry a different name or number without extra setup.
  • Clean edges cut designs have sharp, crisp outlines.
  • Small runs it is practical from small quantities.
  • Special effects reflective, metallic and flock finishes are easy to apply.
  • Precise placement designs can be positioned accurately, including on pockets, sleeves and small areas.

Where another method fits better

Heat transfer is not the right choice for everything. Large designs can feel heavy and less breathable. Complex designs with many colours are better handled by DTF, DTG or screen printing, and large simple runs are usually cheaper by screen printing. Vinyl designs with very fine detail can be hard to weed and apply.

We will tell you if your design or quantity points to another method. We would rather recommend the right route in writing than sell heat transfer where it is not a good fit. You can read about screen printing, DTG, DTF, sublimation and embroidery on their own pages.

Artwork, colours and sizes

Vector artwork is preferred for cut vinyl, as the machine cuts along the lines. Very thin lines and tiny text can be hard to cut and apply, so we check line thickness before production. For names and numbers, we agree the font, the size and the placement, and we confirm the list of names and numbers in writing.

Colours are chosen from the material range, so we match as closely as the material allows and show a sample. Size matters too, because large transfers change how a garment feels, so we confirm size and position before bulk. For team wear, we plan different sizes of print for different garment sizes.

Durability and care

A well-applied heat transfer is durable under normal use, but its life depends on the material, the fabric, the pressing and the care. We recommend washing inside out at moderate temperature, avoiding high heat in the dryer and not ironing directly on the transfer.

We do not promise a specific number of washes, because it depends on the fabric, the care and the use. For workwear and uniforms that will be washed often, we recommend a wash test on a sample before approving the run, so you can see how the transfer behaves under your conditions.

Quantities, sampling and approval

Heat transfer is practical for small quantities, personalised items and mixed lists of names and numbers. Made-to-order garments start from 50 pieces per style, and decoration is planned together with the garment. For business customers who need decoration on blanks, send details of the garments and we will advise on feasibility.

Before bulk, we recommend a sample to check colour, size, placement and feel. Approve it in writing, and it becomes the reference for the run. For lists of names and numbers, we confirm the list in writing before production. Ready stock in Germany from 1 piece is also available for business customers who want to decorate garments themselves.

Send us the design and the garment

Tell us the garment, the design, the placement, any names or numbers and the quantity. We will respond in writing with whether heat transfer is the right method, what we need to confirm and how the sample step works. We sell to business customers only, and we will say clearly if another method would serve you better.
