Private labelling that makes a garment unmistakably yours

Private labelling is the set of details that turn a garment into your product: your woven or printed neck label, your size and care labels, your hangtags, your packaging and, where relevant, your barcode. It is how a customer recognises your brand when they pick up a garment, turn it over and check the label. It is also what the law requires you to provide, since textile products sold in the EU must carry certain information.

This page explains what private labelling includes, the main label types, what the labels must show, how artwork and placement are agreed, what to think about before ordering and how sampling and approval work. It is written for brand owners and buyers who want their own label on every piece. We arrange private labelling as part of a complete garment order, and it is closely linked to our white label and private label manufacturing.

What private labelling includes

A fully labelled garment usually carries several elements, and each has a different job.

  • Main neck label your brand name or logo, woven, printed or heat-transferred.
  • Size label the size, and sometimes a fit note.
  • Care and composition label washing instructions, fibre content and other required information.
  • Hangtag a card or tag that carries branding, a price or product story.
  • Packaging bags, boxes or tissue carrying your branding.

We help you decide which elements you need and how they work together, so the finished garment looks consistent.

Main label types

Labels can be built several ways, and the choice affects look, feel and cost.

  1. 01

Woven labels fine, durable and high in perceived quality, good for detailed logos.

  2. 02

Printed labels flexible for colour and artwork, with a softer, flatter look.

  3. 03

Heat-transfer labels printed directly inside the garment, which avoids scratchy tags and suits underwear, sleepwear and children's clothing.

  4. 04

Leather or patch labels used for a heritage look on denim, outerwear and bags.

For garments that sit against the skin, a tagless heat-transfer label is often more comfortable, and we will advise on this where it matters.

What the labels must show

Textile products sold in the EU must carry fibre composition information, and many garments need care instructions and a size. Rules vary by product and country, and some products have additional requirements, such as those for children's clothing or products with specific claims.

We help you draft label content in the languages you sell in, and we point out what usually needs to be included. We are not a legal advisor, so for your own market we recommend that you confirm the exact requirements for your product. Label accuracy matters, because a wrong composition statement is a compliance problem, not a design detail.

Artwork, placement and size

Send your logo as a vector file, together with colour references and any brand guidelines. For woven labels, very fine detail can be lost because the label is made of thread, so we check the smallest elements. For printed labels, resolution and colour are the main considerations.

Placement matters too. A neck label sits at the back neck or at the side seam, depending on the garment, and we confirm position and stitching on the sample. Label size affects comfort and look, so we agree it with you. We also check that labels do not interfere with the garment's finish or fit.

Barcodes, hangtags and packaging

If you sell through retailers or marketplaces, you may need barcodes on hangtags or labels. We can arrange barcode printing to the numbers you provide, and we check that the barcode scans correctly. Hangtags, packaging and carton marks are described in more detail on our hangtags and barcodes and custom packaging pages.

The combined effect of label, hangtag and packaging is what your customer experiences. We plan these elements together so that the result feels like one considered product, not a collection of separate parts.

Quantities, sampling and approval

Labels and tags are made to your artwork, so minimum quantities apply, and they vary by type. We tell you the minimum for your chosen label type early in the process. Made-to-order garments start from 50 pieces per style, and labels are planned together with the garment.

Before bulk, we recommend a sample garment with the real labels attached, so you can check the look, placement, size and feel. Approve it in writing, including the label text, and it becomes the reference for the run. We will not change label text after approval without your written confirmation.

Send us your brand details

Tell us the product, the logo files, the label types you have in mind, the languages for care labels and the quantity. We will respond in writing with a label plan, what we need to confirm and how the sample step works. We sell to business customers only, and we will say clearly if something you have in mind needs a different approach.
