Polyester is the working fibre of sport, workwear and everyday durability

Polyester is the most widely used fibre in clothing worldwide. It is strong, dries quickly, resists wrinkles and holds colour well, which is why it dominates sportswear, workwear, outerwear linings and many everyday garments. It also divides opinion: some customers dislike how it feels or worry about its origin, while others value what it does.

This page explains what polyester does well, where it falls short, how it is knitted and woven, and how to decide whether it belongs in your garment. It is written for buyers who want an honest picture and the right questions to ask.

What polyester does well

Polyester is a synthetic fibre made from petroleum-based raw material. Its strengths are practical.

  • Durability it resists abrasion and keeps its shape through repeated washing.
  • Quick drying it absorbs very little water, so garments dry fast.
  • Colour stability it holds dye well and resists fading in sunlight.
  • Easy care it wrinkles little and needs little ironing.
  • Versatility it can be made smooth, textured, soft or crisp.

These properties explain its place in activewear, uniforms, workwear and many promotional garments.

Where polyester needs care

Polyester also has limits. It is less breathable than natural fibres in its basic form and can feel clammy if the fabric is poorly constructed. It can hold odour, because bacteria cling to the fibre surface, which is why some sport garments use finishes. It generates static and can pill in some constructions.

Many of these issues are about fabric construction and finishing, not the fibre itself. A well-made polyester knit with the right yarn and finish can feel soft and breathe well. A cheap, flat one will not. This is why we ask how the garment will be used before recommending a specific polyester fabric.

Knits, wovens and finishes

Polyester is used in many constructions. Interlock and jersey knits suit t-shirts and activewear. Mesh gives ventilation. Fleece is brushed polyester for warmth and is widely used for jackets and hoodies. Woven polyester is used for jackets, linings, workwear and bags. Microfibre gives a soft, light hand.

Finishes add function. Moisture-management finishes help sweat spread and dry. Anti-odour treatments reduce smell. Water-repellent finishes help shed light rain. Each should be described honestly, and we can tell you what is realistic for a given fabric and where a test is needed to support the claim.

Blends with cotton and elastane

Polyester is often blended. A cotton-polyester blend combines the comfort of cotton with the durability, shrink resistance and quick drying of polyester, and is common in uniforms, workwear and everyday basics. Adding elastane gives stretch and recovery for activewear, leggings and fitted pieces.

The blend ratio changes the result. More polyester means faster drying and more durability. More cotton means a softer, more natural feel. We help you choose a ratio that suits your customer and use, and we show you the feel in a sample.

Colour, printing and decoration

Polyester takes colour well and holds it. It is a well-suited fabric for sublimation, a process that transfers dye into the fibre for vivid, all-over prints that do not crack or wash out. Heat transfer, DTF and screen print also work, though some methods need adjustments for heat-sensitive fabrics. Embroidery suits polo shirts and jackets.

We agree colours against your reference and discuss colour fastness. Dark polyester can show dye migration with some prints, so we recommend testing a sample when you combine dark fabric with light artwork.

Recycled polyester and what to claim

Recycled polyester is made from existing material, such as plastic bottles or textile waste, rather than new raw material. It can reduce the use of virgin resources, and some customers value that. It does not change how the garment performs, and it still sheds fibres in washing.

A claim about recycled content needs documents that cover the material. If you want to make one, tell us early so we can say what is possible. See our recycled polyester page for more detail. We will not describe a garment as recycled without the evidence for that lot.

Common questions about polyester

With polyester, buyers first ask about how it feels to wear. Pure polyester can feel smooth and sometimes cool, but depending on yarn and construction it can also feel soft and cotton-like. Second, buyers ask about odour and moisture: polyester absorbs little water and dries quickly, but it can hold odours more, which is why finishes and blends help. Third is decoration: sublimation works only on polyester, screen printing and DTF must watch for dye migration, and embroidery needs suitable stabiliser.

Sustainability comes up often too, for example about recycled polyester. Here, as everywhere, claims must be backed by documents. Tell us the use and care, and we will say which variant and construction fits.

Choosing polyester for your range

Choose polyester where durability, quick drying and colour stability matter: sport, workwear, outerwear, uniforms and printed garments. Choose cotton or blends where natural feel is the priority. Send us your garment idea, the use and your quantity, and we will propose a fabric and a sample plan. Made-to-order starts from 50 pieces per style.
